The Lesser Butterfly Orchid

I was leaving the woods with Andrew faithfully following me, each of us with an armful of hazel and chestnut stakes for our peas and beans, when Andrew commented that I should face him when talking as the rustle of undergrowth made it difficult to hear me.

As I turned my head to repeat what I had just said I was left speechless at a magnificent sight.  I could barely believe my eyes, but there in a small clearing at the base of an oak tree was a Lesser Butterfly Orchid.  We had seen one for the first time ever three years ago, but even though we searched for them every spring we had not seen another one until today.  As you can see from the photo, the Lesser Butterfly Orchid is standing proud, its intricate petals sparkling white in the sunlight filtering down through the canopy.
