Golden Oriole

We are extremely lucky to have many different birds on and around our old farm, including some that according to the RSPB are rarely seen in Britain.  Today, we have been catching glimpses of a Golden Oriole flying in and out of the poplar trees down our drive.  Like in the famous Kit-Kat advert where the animals put on a performance when the keeper's back is turned, as soon as we got our Nikon binoculars the Golden Orioles disappeared.

The RSPB lists the Green Woodpecker as a similar bird to the Golden Oriole but we have many Green Woodpeckers which to us are easily identified from their song (famous from the Woody Woodpecker cartoons) and their dipping flight pattern across open spaces.  The Golden Oriole is quite different as it is bright yellow when flying, which it tends to do along tree lines.
