Black Redstart Fledgling

Creating bird friendly spaces around the old farm buildings is really starting to pay off for us and them. Yesterday morning we were treated to the wondrous sight of a young Blue Tit being encouraged to leave his nest in the wall of one of the outbuildings by his parents.  They enticed him to make the final leap from the nest edge into adulthood by flying up to him with a juicy caterpillar in their mouths and then flying off without feeding him.  It wasn't long before he took the bait and soared (well wobbled) off into the distance.

Then in the afternoon we got a close-up view of this gorgeous little Black Redstart fledgling as he sat looking very bemused on the wall of the pig sties. He looked as if he had only just left his nest and was wondering what he should do next. We needn't have worried though as his parents were keeping a watchful eye on his progress, and as I moved closer to get another photograph he flew up the wall of the pig sty and onto the roof.

We are very pleased that the Black Restarts appear to be doing very well this year, with at least two nestings pairs in the barn.  The little fledgling in the picture was on the opposite side of the courtyard to the barn, so we hope that he came from yet another nest. We had become quite concerned about them as for the past couple of years we had not seen any fledglings despite the Black Redstarts doing well in the past.
